Startups Scramble to define employee  (1h7d)

Hotels are getting much more sophisticated about the music they play in their lobbies, restaurants, spas and pools. Properties are increasingly working with music-design companies, compiling separate playlists for different spaces and particular times of day. They’re even zeroing in on the optimal number of beats per minute. –How luxury hotels lure you with music

Maybe it’s that text itself is disappearing. After all, the first visitors to the web spent their time online reading web magazines. Then came blogs, then Facebook, then Twitter. Now it’s Facebook videos and Instagram and SnapChat that most people spend their time on. There’s less and less text to read on social networks, and more and more video to watch, more and more images to look at. Are we witnessing a decline of reading on the web in favor of watching and listening?…..But the Stream, mobile applications, and moving images: They all show a departure from a books-internet toward a television-internet. We seem to have gone from a non-linear mode of communication — nodes and networks and links — toward a linear one, with centralization and hierarchies. –The web we have to save (1h7d)

  • The feature could also prove popular in developing countries, where access to traditional mobile networks can be too expensive for many locals, and it could help in places where freedom of speech is curtailed and Internet traffic censored or monitored. Some 5 million people have downloaded the FireChat app worldwide so far, with many of them in the U.S., Iran, and Hong Kong, where it was used during the recent student uprising. Users can create chatrooms, which work online and offline, and gather more than 10,000 people to discuss everything from football games to politics to Italian food. “We are going after the fraction of the market where the other messengers don’t work,” Benoliel says. –FireChat App Lets You Text Anywhere Without Service

Do you know what your time is really worth? – WSJ
Some younger chief executives favor a flatter organizational structure so they can make decisions faster. While some older corporate chiefs also prefer fewer management layers, the practice appears to be gaining popularity faster among the new crop of CEOs, experts said. Thanks to flatter organizational structures, “the younger generation of CEOs is more inclined to spend time with their employees all the time,” Mr. Cohn observed. –Why the boss is younger than you are
Republican presidential candidates are having fun with all this.Marco Rubio, who last year sided with Uber over regulators in Miami, accused Mrs. Clinton of trying to “regulate 21st-century industries with 20th-century ideas.” Jeb Bush pointedly traveled by Uber for his visit to Thumbtack, a Silicon Valley startup. Meanwhile, Rand Paul says he would like our government to adopt the Uber model—more information and customer ratings—while Ted Cruz says his campaign will be as disruptive of politics-as-usual as Uber is of old business models. –Uber Crashes the Democratic Party
